What Does AFUE Mean?

AFUE reflects average seasonal performance rather than a best-case efficiency reading. That means it accounts for the normal losses that occur during start-ups, shut-downs, and everyday operation throughout the heating season.

One important limitation is that AFUE measures fuel efficiency only. According to Natural Resources Canada, the rating does not include the electricity used by the blower motor and other furnace components.

How AFUE Ratings Work

AFUE is calculated by comparing a furnace’s annual heat output to its annual fuel input. Testing organizations use a standardized method known as ASHRAE Standard 103 to measure and compare furnace efficiency.

Inside the furnace, the burner heats the primary heat exchanger, which transfers heat from the combustion gases to the air moving through your system. In a standard-efficiency furnace, the remaining heat leaves through the flue. A high-efficiency furnace adds a secondary heat exchanger that captures additional heat from those exhaust gases before they exit the home, extracting energy that would otherwise be wasted.

This is why a furnace can operate above its AFUE rating under ideal conditions. AFUE measures seasonal efficiency, not peak performance, so it includes the energy lost during start-up, shut-down, and other normal operating cycles throughout the heating season.

What AFUE Rating Should You Choose?

Best AFUE for Budget-Conscious Homeowners

If keeping costs under control is your priority, choose a two-stage 96% AFUE furnace. These systems typically cost less than premium modulating models while still delivering excellent efficiency. Before spending extra on a higher-end unit, consider investing in attic insulation and air sealing. In many homes, reducing heat loss saves more energy than gaining the last few efficiency points.

Best AFUE for Long-Term Energy Savings

Planning to stay 15 years or more? Then a 97% to 98% furnace earns its premium. Pairing that furnace with a heat pump pays back faster, though. Your gas burner then handles only the coldest days.
